Food Review: Orgran Chocolate Muffin Mix

Anyone who knows me knows that, as a result of being both ‘economically challenged’ (i.e. a student) and a lover of making a mess in the kitchen, I rarely buy pre-made mixes for, well, just about anything. Especially baked goods, which I much prefer to make from scratch.

That being said, I bought a box of Orgran Chocolate Muffin Mix quite some time ago, and never quite got around to making them. Anyway, inspired by my newly-acquired silicone baking cups, and a desire for chocolate, I pulled out the box and set about making.

If, like me, you don’t have a hand-held electric mixed, don’t stress: it’s perfectly easy to hand-mix the batter, with no ill effects. Also, being that I can’t leave anything well enough alone, I added some vegan white chocolate chips – which had also been awaiting use for quite some time – and protein mix powder to the mixture.

The muffins took a little longer than the recommended 18-20minutes, but that could well have been my oven. The taste verdict is… fantastic. Unlike many gluten-free products, these were moist, slightly spongey, and didn’t have that distinct ‘not wheat’ taste. They were a little crumbley, but that could well have been my own addition. I have to say, they are incredibly rich. Like, have one with some soy vanilla icecream and you’d have one hell of a decadent dessert, sort of rich.

Verdict: More of a dessert than a standard ‘plain-fare’ muffin, but decadently rich and delicious. Moist, delicious, and very quick and easy to make. Probably the perfect ‘beginner to baking’ mix.

Overall rating: 9/10.

Also, I feel I should note that all of Orgran’s products are vegan, gluten-free, and basically free of all known allergens. And all the products I’ve tried have been fantastic, so definitely look into it for an easy alternative to making foods from scratch.
